Hamas Strengthening Ties With Shiite World, Entrenching in Lebanon

Hamas is strengthening ties with Iran and the Shiite Muslim world, and is entrenching itself in south Lebanon, Israel Security Agency head (Shin Bet) Nadav Argaman said Sunday.

Briefing ministers at the weekly cabinet meeting, Argaman said that Hamas leaders in Gaza continue to have a leadership role in promoting terror activities in Yehudah and Shomron in order to destabilize the region. He said the Shin Bet scuttled some 200 terror attacks since the beginning of 2017, including about 70 in July and August alone.

”Despite the relative quiet, the security situation in Yehudah and Shomron is delicate and is characterized by high sensitivity to religious incidents and by a steady diet of terror attacks (including stabbing and shooting attacks, and car rammings,“ the agency said in a statement.

Terror attempts increased following the July 14 murder of two policemen adjacent to Har Habayis in Yerushalayim. In addition, officials expect a spike in attempts to carry out terrorist attack ahead of the Yumim Toivim.

Argaman also said that the time since the end of Operation Protective Edge has been the quietest three-year period in three decades. Hamas is having strategic trouble and has been unable to present either political achievements to the people of Gaza or solutions for the civil and infrastructure challenges.

Nevertheless, the terror group continues to invest resources towards a new round of fighting with Israel, Argaman said.
