Yerushalayim (TPS) – An IDF soldier, Private Yuval Mena, died on Motzei Shabbos when a Hummer jeep overturned near the Gaza Strip border fence. Three additional soldiers were wounded in the accident. The wounded soldiers, all members of the Paratroop Brigade, were airlifted to Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva. One was listed in moderate condition, and two were reported to have sustained minor injuries.
The Army Spokesperson’s Unit said the accident occurred during a routine patrol of the border fence because the driver of the jeep was driving too fast for the road conditions. The driver veered off the road, but when he tried to get back onto the security road without coming to a complete stop the vehicle rolled over several times.
The military also said that all the soldiers in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, but the belts were torn by the impact of the crash. The commander was thrown from the Hummer and flattened by the weight of the jeep. He was declared dead at the scene.
