San Marino may look peaceful today, but this tiny 23 square mile country has spent centuries surviving in the shadow of Italy. Perched on top of a mountain, surrounded entirely by another nation, San Marino feels like a forgotten world trying to protect its independence.
From riding the cable car into the capital to wandering through narrow streets high above Italy, this microstate feels both beautiful and vulnerable at the same time. Even the quiet chairlift ride down the mountain feels like leaving another country behind.
